UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA ANTHROPOLOGY STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION
For the latest updates follow UMASA on Facebook:
Interested in working with UMASA or as a student representative on a department committee?

There are numerous volunteer opportunities that are offered within UMASA or facilitated by UMASA for the department. Not only is this a great way to get to know both students and faculty members, but volunteers learn about and provide input for UMASA, department, and university-level planning and organization.

The committee positions are voted on in April at the final general meeting of the academic year (for the next academic year), however, during the year volunteers are required to help out the various committees. Please use the contact form or e-mail umasa@myumanitoba.ca to find out how you can volunteer this year.

In order to prepare for next year, please check out the many non-executive positions (below) which will need to be filled in September of every year. Also, for a description of executive positions, which will be voted on in the early spring, download the current UMASA constitution on the "About UMASA and Constitution".

Positions within UMASA:
Fundraising committee: UMASA regularly works to raise money for social/educational activities and scholarship funds. In the past this has included organizing bake sales and raffles at events as well as seeking grants for larger projects — but we’re open to suggestions. Fundraising typically involves a number of volunteers but the number varies from project to project; it’s a great way to get involved and there’s always room for more volunteers.

UMASA journal committee: typically we need one or more individuals to oversee editing and publishing our student journal. Additionally, a number of volunteers are required to review submissions.

UMASA members often assemble other committees to organize relevant projects on an ad-hoc basis. As mentioned, most positions are officially filled in September, however, more help is often needed. Please contact us to find out how you can get involved.

Positions on Department of Anthropology committees:

Department council: the Anthropology Department requires three (3) undergraduate students and three (3) graduate students to sit on department council meetings. UMASA elects these individuals every year during the first general meeting. Students with seats on department council represent the interests of anthropology students by reporting council activity back to the anthropology student body (usually via UMASA meetings) and, in turn, voting on decisions based on broader student feedback. Council meetings take place at least twice per academic year.

Graduate Program Committee: Three (3) graduate students will be elected every year during the first general meeting. Duties can vary from year to year.

Undergraduate Program Committee: One(1) undergraduate student will be elected during the first general meeting of the year to join the current Undergraduate Vice President on this Committee. Duties may vary from year to year.
